Moscow's Popular Transport System

The Moscow Metro has beautiful and opulent stations that are looked upon as palaces built for the commuting traffic. The Metro rail system is the most efficient way of getting about the city. The roads being congested with traffic, the metro network gets you just about anywhere you want to go and much faster.

Metro rails consist of 11colour coded lines. During peak times the frequency is less than 2 min. The metro works on a flat fare, therefore a single token is sufficient but you could also buy discount cards for 10 or 20 trips.

It would be rather difficult to read names since everything in the metro is only written in Cyrillic. The best option is to listen to the announcements on the trains. You can hear the arrival station, followed by the next station. If you have lost orientation just get off at a station and check again carefully.

Many of the stations are exquisitely decorated with chandeliers, paintings, mosaics, statues, and each has its own unique style and architecture. Taking the metro in Moscow is a sightseeing tour by itself.
